Puthucode - Vadakke Gramam

The book by S.Jayashanker says about the temple - "Datable to very ancient period, the legend says that the temple is one of the 108 Durga temples established by Lord Parasurama. It is also believed that the sila of the idol was brought from Trttäla after having been sanctified by Lord Parasurama. The temple is known both as Sree Durga Parameswari and Sree Annapoorneswari temple. The temple came into the hands of Natuvil matham Swamiyars of Thrissoor. For centuries the temple was a centre of vedic learning and it has contributed a lot for the spiritual, cultural and social emancipation of the villagers and devotees."

One of the few agraharams where I have seen women folk given precedence in talking about their village. Smt Vijayam gave out important information like "theru koothu" or "street theatre" by the brahmins of the village with plays like Savitri-Sathyavan (The story occurs as an embedded narrative in the Mahabharata as told by sage Markandeya). She also recalls Sri Goplakrishna Iyer who opened an elementary school to educate the girls who had no access to education. Sri Goplakrishna Iyer surely realized that educating girls "builds stronger families, communities, and economies".

Sri Gopalakrishnan elaborates on the proceedings with details. Sri P K Balan mentions about Maha Periyava I wondered how much the saint has done during his lifetime and his deep memory about things.

Every Kerala temple has a unique offering to propitiate the Gods. My first time at the Puthucode Annapoorneshwari Temple aka Bhagavathy temple. The temple looks glorious during this Navaratri. I consider it my fortune to witness this evening a unique offering called “azhal” at the temple. A cloth dipped in gingelly oil is hung from a pillar and after the evening prayers, is lit. With each chant of prayer the priest sprinkles water over the burning cloth and the flames rise. It is spectacular and makes the devotee fully present - in mind, body and spirit as they visualize the divine in the rising flames. I read that the sacred ash which remains is “prasadam” which has the blessing of the Puthucode Bhagavathy.

There are 4 gramams in Puthucode and the distribution of Navarathri festival days is as follows:

    * 2nd & 7th Vilakku East Village

    * 3rd, 5th & 8th Vilakku North Village

    * 4th & 6th Vilakku South Village

    * 9th Vilakku West Village

Radhe Krishna
