Agraharam 53 in the 100 Agraharams Project
Kavassery - Ottupura Gramam
The earliest agraharams were simple, with homes covered by roofs of coconut palm leaves. Over time, as economic conditions improved, they transitioned to clay tiles. The Oattuperai Gramam derives its name from this transition, as it was among the first in the region to adopt tiled (Oatu = tile) roofs, setting it apart from neighboring agraharams.
Sri Balasubramaniam, a respected elder, reminisces about the abundance of paddy that once flowed into the agraharam temples, a tradition lost after the 1970 land reforms. Meanwhile, Sri Viswanathan of Ottupura Gramam shares tales of yesteryear, recounting the lives of towering figures who tirelessly preserved their knowledge while leading simple yet profound lives. He speaks of the learned Ghanapatis and Vedic pundits who selflessly imparted the wisdom of the Vedas and the art of music to thousands.
I can only imagine the immense spiritual merit these noble souls accumulated during their lives. Their good karma surely permeates their bloodlines and the agraharams they called home.
Kavassery, with its steps leading into the village, holds a divine charm. It is one of six Brahmin villages located about 3 miles from Alathur, on the road to Padur/Pazhayannur. These villages are:
• Nellithara Gramam
• Oattuperai Gramam
• Easwara Pattar Gramam
• Venkachi Gramam
• Mullakkal Gramam
• Naanu Pattar Gramam
