Nallepilly Agraharam - 100 Agraharams Project

Palghat Gap - The approximately 25 kilometer gap in the Western Ghats has been the trading route for centuries. Nellapilly is on the trade route called 'Vazhi' or 'Peruvazhi' that connects the Cauvery delta on the east to the ports of Ponnani / Muziris on the Malabar coast. I read an article on Intach that the trade goes back to the Sangam period.

Nallepilly was an outpost of the 'erstwhile Cochin state and boasts its share of aristocratic families. Their grand houses are still a joy to behold; in conception, style and craftsmanship'

18 kilometers to the south and east of Palakkad is Nellepilly. It is a part of Chittur Taluk.

Many may not know that on the 8th of February 1900 there was an earthquake in this region and an article in The Hindu of August 2015 told about the Epicenter being at Nallepilly. The quake rocked Coimbatore, Nilgiris and was felt elsewhere.

Nallepilly's Sastha temple has a great unique past as explained by Sri Kasi Viswanathan of the agrahram. We were lucky to get insights through Sri Venkitaraman, President and Sri Swaminathan, Treasurer of the Brahmin association.

The agraharam has a pond on either end of its long village.
