Datable to very ancient period, the legend says that the temple is one of the 108 Durga temples established by Lord Parasurama. It is also believed that the sila of the idol was brought from Trttäla after having been sanctified by Lord Parasurama. The temple is known both as Sree Durga Parameswari and Sree Annapoorneswari temple. The temple came into the hands of Natuvil matham Swamiyars of Thrissoor. For centuries the temple was a centre of vedic learning and it has contributed a lot for the spiritual, cultural and social emancipation of the villagers and devotees

Puthucode – Padinjare Gramam
The last of the four Puthucode Agraharams. Sri Annapoorneswari faces west. Consequently the Padinjare Gramam folks have the view of the gold plated dwajasthambam.
Sri Puducode Rama Iyer Ramachander writes: "The Brahmins of my native village in Puthukode(puducode) reverentially remember that Maha Periyava visited their native place and stayed there for two months doing daily worship at the Annapurneswari temple there. It seems he conducted a Veda Sadas there and honoured the great Vedic Pundit Rama Sastrigal. The villagers have preserved a great photo of Maha Periyava when he was in their village"
There is a history about the Sarvajana School in the village - Sri P R Ramachander writes in his blog thus:
"At the initial stages there was only a school run by one Gopalakrishna Iyer in the village which used to give education up to elementary level. At that time to study up to high school, students had either to go to Alathur or Thiruvilvamala. Poor and middle class students used to walk down to and fro while rich families used to hire a home and employ a cook so that their children can study there. Later a Sanskrit Pata Sala called “Hari Hara Pathasala“ was established by one Justice Sundaram Iyer who was from Puducode a prominent Madras High Court judge during the early part of the 20th centuary. This was integrated into an English medium higher secondary school with greater emphasis on Sanskrit by one Sri P.R. Narayana iyer. This institution also became a Sanskrit College in later days."
In another Puducode site I read
"The early schools were known as Kutipallikkudamgal. Harihara Sanskrit College, established in Puthukode for the study of the Vedas, was one of the two Sanskrit colleges known in Malabar at that time. Due to lack of students, the functioning of the said college was stopped and in 1946, the present Sarvajana High School was established in its place. The construction of the said high school was completed with the donations and voluntary work of people of different castes and religions. This is why the said school got the name Sarvajana High School."
I wonder why there are so many colored flags in front of a School with political graffiti!!
I also quote from an article on the web: "A few prominent citizens who took active steps for getting the Agrasala constructed, paving the “Seeveli Panthi” all round the temple with granite and erecting a copper flag mast are Maniyan Pattali, Ambiseshan Rama Pattar, Gopala Warrior, Manjapra Seshamani Iyer and Mannappadam Swaminatha Vadhyar could be mentioned among many others. Another individual who took active interest both in the village and temple affairs is Sri. P.R. Anantha Narayana Vadhyar, who was respected for his organising ability as much as for his knowledge of the rituals, sastras and the Vedas."
I wonder what happened to the organization called SAPCO which I keep reading about. I paste the following from an article in the web:
"SAPCO, Sri Annapoorneswari Pooja Co-ordinators — was established by the villagers in 1982. The immediate aim of SAPCO was resotratjon of the age old traditional daily poojas by collecting funds, which will be outside the Devaswom control. The efforts started by the villagers has gathered momentum and the daily poojas are now being performed without any hitch thanks to the funds collected by SAPCO. Encouraged by the work of SAPCO many villagers came forward to help in understanding renovation and repairs to the temple which were basically required to keep the structure intact was done between 1982—85 and a Kumbhabhishekam was performed in February 1986. After the Kumbhabhishekam in 1986, the day to day rituals in the temple are being conducted as it was in the olden days with the co-operation and financial support of the Devotees at large. In the year 1992 SAPCO undertook an extensive effort to new the dilapidated structures of the temple at a cost of Rs. 40.00 lakhs. It was also decided to do a Naveekarana Kalasam and Kumbhabhishekam after the completion of the repairs/renovation."
Radhe Krishna!
