Santhana Gopala Krishna Temple,Pallasenna
I had a brief mention about the history of Pallassana in the 'Pallassana - East' edition. However one will also learn from Pallasena the Onathallu. Onathallu, which is 'also known as Kayyāmkali or Avittathallu, is an Indian martial dance and a semi-contact combat sport performed in Kerala during the festival of Onam.'. The sport has its origins in the wars the locals fought as a part of the Kolathanadu Kingdom.
If you have to reach Pallassana west from the east village you have to take the Padmanabha Marar road. Both villages are less than 2 kilometers apart.
"By the beginning of the 20th century, two schools of Thayambaka dominated the indigenous percussion music of Kerala. Of the two, the one that flourished in the eastern part of Palakkad had its accent on melody rather than the structural coherence for which the Malamakkavu School has been famous for. Pallassana Padmanabha Marar was a supremo of the Palakkad school." Naming of the road in his memory is Pallassana's tribute to its son.
Sri P.R.Radhakrishnan in his blog writes "...the IYERS who came to PALLASSANA and settled in West Agraharam is seen having their temple for Lord Santhana Gopakrishnaswamy. Since all IYERS are followers of Adi Shankara and Adi Shankara believed in ONE GOD as the ultimate who had no GUNAS ( NIRGUNA BRAHMAM) , it is possible that West Village Brahmins were originally Vaishnavates who later joined as followers of Adi Shankara might have migrated to this Village who constructed a temple for their ISHTA DEVATHA i.e. SANTHANA GOPALAKRISHNA SWAMY since Adi Shankara, himself has said " SHIVAAYA VISHNU ROOPAYA". However, now I saw a small Shiva Lingam also in this Temple. Further, generally the Brahmins of this village used to wear the sign GOPEE CHANDANA although , now a days they also wear the sign with Bhasma."
S Jayashanker in 'Temple of Palakkad District' mentions 'Prior to the Land Reforms Act, the temple owned paddy fields which fetched 1,200 paras of paddy, besides one acre of dry land. Now only the dry land remains in the possession of gramakkãrs. The temple complex has an extent of 50 cents.' Thus over 10 tons of paddy would accrue to the temple from its lands and now nothing. It is unjust and it makes me sad.
'The main sila idol of Lord Krishna of standing pose (height: 60 cm.) has the sankalpa of Sree Santana Gopalakshnan. The idol has four arms with conch, disc, club and lotus in hands. All other idols are made of sila, Lord Siva in linga form (30 cm.), Goddess Bhagavati of mirror type, Lord Ganapati of sitting pose, Lord Subramanya and Lord Ayyappa' says the book
