Agraharam 57 in the 100 Agraharams Project
Kavassery - Nanu Pattar Gramam
This morning, a senior journalist from PTI, residing in Palakkad, called to discuss the 100 Agraharams Project. He asked me a curious question—why “100 Agraharams” when historical records mention only 96? The answer lies in my approach to the project: I treated each village with its own presiding deity as a distinct agraharam, respecting the unique identities of their residents. For instance, while Chittur comprises four agraharams today and Kavassery six, each might have once been a singular entity.
Among these, Nanu Pattar Gramam stands as a vibrant testament to the agraharam culture. At its heart lies the Ganapathy temple, cherished by the village, and the revered Shiva temple, shared by all six agraharams of Kavassery:
• Nellithara Gramam
• Oattupperai Gramam
• Easwara Pattar Gramam
• Venkachi Gramam
• Mullakkal Gramam
• Nanu Pattar Gramam
Each agraharam has its distinct rhythm of rituals and traditions, weaving a rich cultural tapestry that reflects devotion and heritage.
I am deeply moved by the dedication of people like Sri Akhilesh Mishra, the officiating priest here. He is eloquent in both Tamil and Malayalam besides Hindi, and his devotion, which I could perceive from his short speech, resonates in every ritual he conducts. My heartiest namaskarams to him and others who have traveled great distances to serve the divine in these sacred spaces.
