Agraharam 52 in the 100 Agraharams Project
Karumanassery Gramam
Every agraharam in this 100Agraharam project is throwing up surprises and through this project I am jogging the memories of the folks who have spent a considerable amount of time with their respective villages.
Listen to the memories of Sri K S Narayanaswamy who is into his 90's and has a long and clear memory of the events that shaped his agraharam. He recalls his roots near Thiruvaiyaru and mentions about the Sapthasthanam temples like ThiruKandiyur and Thiruviyaru (he himself was from Thirukattupalli) from where the craftsmen arrived into this Palakkad village in 1945 to construct the temple car - 'ther'. He proudly mentions the geometry of the peetam of the temple car as 'shatkone' - geometric shape. He recalls the services of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose and the difficulties during the war for food with strict rationing. He speaks proudly about freedom from the British.
The young reading this should realize their good fortune to be living in a age of abundance and should remember with gratitude the sacrifices of their forefathers who have faced persecution and poverty.
The Karumanassery Agraharam is Situated nearly 37 kms south of Palakkad Junction and about 4 kms southeast of Vadakkencherry. The Temples of Palakkad district by S Jayashanker quotes as follows:
"Datable to sixteenth century, the temple has a swayambhoo idol. It is reported that in those days the place had thick jungles. One day a person went to collect green leaves from the jungles and while he was sharpening his hoe on a nearby granite stone he saw blood oozing out of it. He reported the matter to the nearby Brähmin family. A prasna was then conducted by the Brähmins and it was revealed therein that the stone had the powers of Lord Ayyappa. Immediately initial rites were done to the idol. Later for the use of Brähmins another idol, of Sree Krshna, was installed. Subsequently a temple was built at the site for Lord Ayyappa and Lord Krishna...The temple owned large extent of properties earlier but now owns only two acres. The temple complex has an extent of one acre."
