History

Even though, Kerala is culturally abundant in Devi upasana, worshipping and celebrating different forms Shakthi’s it is very surprising to note that, Maalakshmi, the Godess of prosperity and wellbeing has very few dedicated shrines in the region. The residents consider thier Agraharam as a prosperous village amongst the Palakkad agraharams, as Mahalakshmi's presence shower endless fortunes to her devotees and visitors.

The deity, which was brought from VaradarajaPerumal Kovil to Kariot Village the extension of West Village after a petty quarrel between the then villagers and constructed a new sanctum for the Lakshmidevi.  The name of the village is considered to have come from a particular way of roof tiling method, once followed in this stretch of houses in the Agraharam which is called as “Karai odu’.

Perinkulam - Kariot Gramam - 100 Agraharams Project

Kariot Gramam - I was intrigued at the name Kariot which is not usual for a gramam. Parameswaran mama tells me that since the second group removed Mahalakshmi from the Padinjare Gramam for a reason - the gramam was called "kariyathodu" (idol removed for a reason) which became Kariot. Stepping inside the temple transported us to a delightful all timber namaskara mandapam with Dikpala carvings on the ceiling. I couldn't peel my eyes off the woodwork. After a series of misfortunes which affected the families who separated the divine couple - it has been tradition to combine the rituals of both the Padinjare and Kariot gramams with precedence to Lord Varadaraja. The hall in front of the temple was busy with a upanayanam and the "vadu" was being brought to the temple to be blessed. The inners of the Mahalakshmi temple have been maintained without any unsightly tin sheets between the outer corridor and the sanctum. I love such temples that allow sun and rain to fall on the devotee.

The temple website has a mention about the origin of the name: "The name of the village is considered to have come from a particular way of roof tiling method, once followed in this stretch of houses in the Agraharam which is called as “Karai odu’."

Sri P R Ramachander in his blog about the agraharam writes: "Four ponds have been dug by iyers in the village viz., Suryappa pattar kolam, Annakutty kolam, Anandan Kolam and Chitri Kolam." The elders of the village and many agraharams across this land wisely dug ponds wherever they lived. They had great knowledge about the hydrology of the place and did their study of topography, runoff etc before digging these timeless and useful structures.

நீர்இன்று அமையா யாக்கைக்கு எல்லாம் உண்டி கொடுத்தோர் உயிர் கொடுத்தோரே! says the Purananooru (1st century Sangam Literature)

"Aapo Janayathaa Ca Nah" says Apah Suktam of Rig Veda - "O Water, you are the source of our lives."

Ramachandran mama further mentions about the leading sons of Perinkulam thus: "Among the prominent people of the village are Sri P.R.Subramanya Iyer, prominent advocate, Industrialists Ramadas and Balakrishnan who ran the company Rambal limited manufacturing fasteners, Sri P.N.Ganesan who took part in the freedom struggle, Sri Viswanatha iyer who ran a modern dairy in the village and Dr. P.V.Rajappan the agricultural scientist who worked among tribals of Tamil Nadu."
