Kizhakkencherry - 100 Agraharams Project
For the reason that the Kizhakkencherry agraharam is placed adjacent to the Mangalam river I am guessing that the agraharam preceded Vadakkencherry. I could be wrong.
Sri K K Gopalakrishnan of the Kizhakkencherry village states that the founders of the village were from Kandiramanikam in Thiruvarur district.
However there is another Kandaramanikkam in Sivaganga about which I needed clarity. Sri Gopalakrishnan quickly confirmed that the Pandya desam place near Sivaganga was a different one and was famous for the Jallikattu events.
The Thiruvarur Kandiramanikam I read is actually கண்டிராமணிக்கம் (chola desam) in tamil. It means கண்டிரா மாணிக்கம் (unequalled /unmatched jewel). I saw the place on google maps and was stunned to find Agraharam like layouts in the village with a Kodandarama temple, a Shiva temple and a Bala Sasta temple. The place, like many agraharams, is located on the banks of the Tirumalairayanpattinam River which runs parallel to Arasalaru (branches of Cauvery river). The place was in the news for the findings of Budda statues during excavation.
This is another agraharam temple which is on the banks of a northward turning river (uttaravahini). I love the mural paintings on the walls of the temple. The gopuram in the front and the steps to the river behind the temple.
A Keralaiyer blog on the Agraharam quotes "It had about 150 houses in earlier days. ..There was a Maha Ganapathi temple on its shores. This temple was very famous in the entire area. Sankara Jyotsiar who was a minister of Ranjit Singh has built a Kamakshi temple in this village. The story is that he undertook penance in Kanchi Kamakshi Temple and wanted to have a Prathishta of Kamakshi in Kerala. Since available folk tales indicate that he did not belong to this village, the reason for his choice is not clear. There was a system of a village chief called Adhikari in this village. Possibly they ruled over the village and looked after its administration, one of them Mr. K.G.Vaidyanathan is called Kariakar Vaitha. The word Kariakar means manager of a King...The vela in the nearby Nedumbarath Bhagavathi temple is also celebrated in the Gramam...There were many Vedic and Sanskrit scholars belonging to the village. The most famous was Rasanga Sastrigal .His son Subramanya Ganapathigal was a great expert in Gana and Jada of Vedas. Sri Harihara Vadhyar the grand son of Rasanga Vadhyar is an eminent Vedic scholar of the present generation. The other important family in the village is that of Adhikari Ganapathi iyer."
